What Is Homeschool?

The basic definition is an "alternative" means of primary and/or secondary education which involves the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) serving as the home-based educators.  The fact is, this form of education first began in the 17th century when European settlers immigrated to North American soil.  It is not a new or novel educational construct.  With the rise in industrialization, there was a growing need to develop a public school system. The early 19th-century, so-called "factory schools" originated in Prussia.  "Public" education was provided by the state for the first time.  Dozens of students were organized and assigned to a particular group (class) based upon their age.  They would then advance to successive grades after demonstrating mastery of a given curriculum.  This industrialized form of educational was impersonal, efficient, and standardized.  It laid the groundwork for the infrastructure of the public school system in the U.S.  The modern manifestation of homeschooling was first introduced in the U.S. in the 1970s by John Holt who was an educational reformist.

Over the next two decades, there was a growing disapproval of the public school system.  It wasn't until 1992 that homeschooling was officially recognized as a legal option in all 50 states.  In 1993, President Clinton signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.   Since that time, homeschooling has become the fastest growing type of formal education in the U.S.  In 2016, there were 2.3 million homeschoolers.  In 2019, there were 2.5 million.  During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, this number increased to 2.65 million.  As of 2022, there were 4.3 million homeschoolers.  There is also a dramatic increase in homeschooling abroad particularly in countries such as: Australia, Canada, France, Hungary, Japan, Kenya, Russia, Mexico, South Korea, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.

In a recent poll, the top 3 reasons why families have chosen to homeschool are: 1) concerns over safety and school environment, 2) concern about quality of education,  and 3) desire to incorporate religious and/or faith-based instruction.  The increased number of school shootings is certainly a cause for concern.  Additionally, the increased incidence of bullying and subsequent suicide is more than enough for parents to opt to go with home-based education.  When compared to public school, it is a fact that homeschoolers score higher on standardized tests such as the ACT and the SAT.  13% of homeschooling families primarily do so to help shape the hearts of their students by introducing faith-based curriculum.

By seeking to teach children about how to walk with Jesus, these families feel that they can not only better prepare THEIR students for life, they feel that their decision can also make this world a better place; by raising better people.  To this end, Homeschool LYFE Entertainment was created.  We seek to give artists with a unique voice and a unique story the opportunity to be heard and to provide a soundtrack to the Christian life.  Our message is simple--Live Your Faith Eternally.  We believe that this basic principle will allow any and everyone to live out his or her God-given purpose.  We thank you for taking the time to check out our site and support our artists.  We pray that our work will be a blessing to you.
